This research used quantitative approach with quasi exprerimental research method by using Pretest-Posttest Control Group Desain. The population of this research was all of student in class 9A, 9B, 9C SMP Purnama Sumpiuh with 60 student. Whereas, the sample of wxperimental group was class 9A containing 20 student, and the sample of control group was class 9C containing 20 student. The research instrument used were questionanaire and test. The questionanaire was designed in the from ofattitude scale which was used to know the student’ interest in writing a short story. While the test was contructed with 5 essay or subjective questions to measure the students’ ability in writing a short story (knowledge and skill). The result of descriptive analysis showed that contextual approach give positive effect. Students became more interested in writing a short story after they were taught by using contextual approach. This could be proven through the score of t-counted (6,016) &gt; t-table (1,671). Descriptive analysis result showed that using contextual approach gave positive effect on writing a short story. Students were able to know their writing weaknesses, because they have been taught new knowledge through contextual approach by the researcher. Therefore, students were able to complete the formal aspects of a short story (title, author, dialog, narration): able to complete the intrinsic elements of a short story (plot, characters, setting, point of view, theme development); able to combine the structure of a short story (language structure, stability of writing, language varieties). Student were more active and creative in writing a short story based on their own experiences as well as others’ experiences. The result of quanritative descriptive showed that the score (t-counted=8,231) &gt; t-table = 1,671.   Keywords: contextual approach, the interest in writing a short story and the ability in writing a short story. ABSTRAK: Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui pengaruh penggunaan pendekatan kontekstual terhadap minat dan kemampuan menulis cerpen pada siswa kelas 9 SMP Purnama Sumpiuh. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif  dengan metode eksperimen kuasi. Dengan desain Pretest- Posttest Control Group Desain. Populasi penelitian ini adalah seluruh siswa SMP Purnama Sumpiuh kelas 9A, 9B, dan 9C yang berjumlah 60 siswa. Adapun sampel kelompok eksperimen adalah kelas 9A berjumlah 20 siswa dan sampel kelompok kontrol adalah kelas 9C berjumlah 20 siswa. Instrumen penelitian ini menggunakan angket dan tes. Angket berupa skala sikap digunakan untuk mengetahui minat belajar menulis cerpen. Tes berupa soal uraian subjektif berjumlah 5, digunakan untuk mengetahui kemampuan siswa dalam menulis cerpen (pengetahuan dan keterampilan). Hasil analisis deskriptif menunjukkan bahwa pengaruh pengunaan pendekatan kontekstual terhadap minat menulis cerpen berdampak positif. Siswa menjadi lebih memiliki minat dalam menulis cerpen setelah di beri pendekatan kontekstual. Hal ini dapat dibuktikan dari nilai t hitung (6,016)  &gt; t tabel (1,671).   Hasil analisis deskriptif menunjukkan bahwa pengaruh pengunaan pendekatan kontekstual terhadap kemampuan menulis cerpen berdampak positif.  Siswa dapat mengetahui kekurangan dalam hasil cerpennya, karena mendapat pengetahuan yang baru setelah di beri pendekatan kontekstual oleh peneliti. Adapunn siswa dapat melengkapi aspek formal cerpen (judul, nama pengarang, dialog, narasi); dapat melengkapi unsur intrinsik cerpen (plot, tokoh, latar, sudut pandang, pengembangan tema); dapat memadukan struktur cerpen (kaidah plot, dimensi tokoh, dimensi latar); dapat menggunakan bahasa cerpen (kaidah EYD, keajegan penulisan, ragam bahasa). Siswa lebih aktif dan kreatif dalam menulis cerpen berdasarkan pengalaman yang pernah dialami oleh dirinya sendiri bahkan pengalaman dari orang lain.
