- Background: Gayo is an ethnic who lived in Gayo Lues, Province of Aceh. Traditional medicine is still popular convalescence for puerperal mother. Of course, there are a lot of factors which influenced traditional medicine utilization. This article will describe how they use traditional medicine for puerperal mother, what the utility of the medicine is, and how the policy will accommodate the traditional medicine. Method: The research used ethnography method. Result: The result of research illustrates that there are two types of Gayo traditional medicine system for puerperal mother which are external medicine and internal medicine. For external medication they use fumigation as a herb beside their back and smear certain spices on their bodies. Meanwhile, for internal medicine they drink treated certain spices. On their perspective, utililizing traditional medicine is to cure puerperal mother after parturition, to prevent them from disease and illness, and to heal them in order that they can work in the field strongly, and they believe that traditional medication is better than modern medicine by medical doctors. Conclusion: traditional treatment of gayo survive because of perceived benefits in accordance with the expectations of society gayo. Recommendation: it needs traditional medicine development by pharmacological perspectif in order that can be used in the community according to standart. So that, policy for medication of puerperal mother based on local wisdom, family planning, and community might be formulizied.
