After study of the primary type material, the differences between C. apicalis LeConte and C. discoideus LeConte were determined to be numerous and distinct. This species is clearly not related to C. discoideus nor the subgenus Ecnomorphus Motschulsky in general, to which the latter belongs; rather, it is closely aligned with members of the subgenus Myothorax Murray. The glabrous, depressed body plan found in Ecnomorphus is absent in C. apicalis. After comparison with the primary type material, we find this species is instead synonymous with Carpophilus pilosellus Motschulsky, 1858, a species that was described one year prior. This status change is an attempt to limit confusion. Although the species name remains in synonymy, this transfer will help solidify subgeneric definitions in the group and avoid potential problems with future phylogenetic work.</description><description>Published as part of Powell, Gareth S. &amp; Cline, Andrew R., 2017, Type designations and taxonomic remarks for Nearctic sap beetles in the subfamily Carpophilinae Erichson (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), pp. 293-295 in Zootaxa 4268 (2) on page 294, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4268.2.9, http://zenodo.org/record/580262</description><identifier>https://zenodo.org/record/6026984</identifier><identifier>10.5281/zenodo.6026984</identifier><identifier>oai:zenodo.org:6026984</identifier><relation>info:eu-repo/semantics/altIdentifier/url/http://treatment.plazi.org/id/DB6C0252FFFBFFA3B5C9FC8AFEF448C9</relation><relation>doi:10.11646/zootaxa.4268.2.9</relation><relation>url:http://zenodo.org/record/580262</relation><relation>url:http://publication.plazi.org/id/27557A2AFFFAFFA2B55EFFA0FA6C4C55</relation><relation>url:http://zoobank.org/A87A2773-DEBC-4A7D-9A73-281A965601D6</relation><relation>doi:10.5281/zenodo.6026983</relation><relation>url:https://zenodo.org/communities/biosyslit</relation><rights>info:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess</rights><rights>https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/legalcode</rights><source>Type designations and taxonomic remarks for Nearctic sap beetles in the subfamily Carpophilinae Erichson (Coleoptera: Nitidulidae), pp. 293-295 in Zootaxa 4268(2) 294</source><subject>Biodiversity</subject><subject>Taxonomy</subject><subject>Animalia</subject><subject>Arthropoda</subject><subject>Insecta</subject><subject>Coleoptera</subject><subject>Nitidulidae</subject><subject>Carpophilus</subject><subject>Carpophilus apicalis</subject><title>Carpophilus apicalis LeConte</title><type>Other:info:eu-repo/semantics/other</type><type>Other:publication-taxonomictreatment</type><recordID>6026984</recordID></dc>
