South and East Africa east to Tuamotu and Marquesas islands, north to Philippines, south to New Caledonia and Austral Islands. Found in shallow coastal waters, entering lagoons, estuaries and rivers, 0– 3 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine. Crenimugil heterocheilos (Bleeker, 1855) —Half fringelip mullet STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on AMS and WAM material (AMS I. 16668 -010; WAM P. 29596 -013). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. Indonesia and Philippines to Vanuatu, north to southern Japan, south to New Caledonia. Found in shallow coastal waters, entering lagoons, estuaries and rivers, 0– 3 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine. Ellochelon vaigiensis (Quoy & Gaimard, 1825) —Squaretail mullet, yellowtail mullet. STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang as Mugil vaigiensis by Duncker & Mohr (1926: 131). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East Africa, Madagascar and Mascarenes east to Marshall, Gambier and Marquesas islands, north to southern Japan, south to Shark Bay (Western Australia), New South Wales (Australia), New Caledonia and Rapa. Found in shallow coastal waters, entering lagoons, estuaries and rivers, 0– 3 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine. Moolgarda buchanani (Bleeker, 1854) —Bluetail mullet STATUS AT MADANG. New record from Madang, based on AMS and WAM material (AMS I. 16662 -002, I. 16669 -011, I. 16670 -026, I. 16670 -030; WAM P. 27411 -010). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. South and East Africa east to Mariana and Caroline islands, north to southern Japan, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia. Found in shallow coastal waters, entering lagoons, estuaries and rivers, 0– 3 m. Freshwater, transitional water and marine. Moolgarda engeli (Bleeker, 1858) —Kanda mullet STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang as Mugil engeli by Kailola (1975: 180). Specimens photographed at St. CTR 26. AMS and KFRS material. DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. East Africa east to Marquesas and Tuamotu islands, north to Yaeyama Islands, south to northern Australia and New Caledonia, 0– 3 m. Transitional water and marine. Freshwater, transitional water and marine. Paramugil parmatus (Cantor, 1849) —Broad-mouthed mullet STATUS AT MADANG. First record from Madang as Liza oligolepis by Herre (1933: 12). DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT. South Africa, Seychelles and Sri Lanka east to Fiji, north to Philippines, south to northern Australia.
