The order with respect to NBS is unity whereas that with respect to Se(IV) varies between one and two depending on the [Se(IV)]. lncrease in ionic strength as well as [H+] causes a decrease in the rate of the reaction. Br- also retards the reaction considerably. Molecular bromine has been shown to be the actual oxidising species involved in the reaction. Dimeric Se(IV) has been found to be considerably more reactive than the monomeric form.
