- His study aims to improve early reading skills in grade 1 elementary school students by using letter puzzle media. The method used in this study is a descriptive research method using a qualitative approach, with the research subjects consisting of 3 1st grade elementary school students. This study uses to test and non-test techniques as data collection techniques. The test technique in the form of an oral test and a written test is used to determine the level of a student's initial reading ability; the non-test technique is in the form of direct observations related to the initial reading ability of first-grade elementary school students. Researchers carried out field observations as well as gave oral tests to grade 1 student, especially for students who had difficulty in reading. The test is used as a pretest or used by researchers to find out where the student's difficulties are based on the predetermined reading difficulty category. Student A, Student B, and Student C have different reading difficulties. To find out, the researcher gave pretest questions orally and in writing. After conducting observations and oral tests as well as pretests, the researchers made improvements to improve students' initial reading skills by using letter puzzle media. The success criteria determined by the researcher on the student's initial reading ability in applying the use of letter puzzle media were good criteria. In connection with the results of the research and discussion above, it can be concluded that after the application of letter puzzle media in grade 1 elementary school, there was an increase in students' initial reading ability, with sufficient criteria scores on the oral test as well as the pretest and good criteria scores on the post-test test. Thus the use of letter puzzle media can improve the early reading ability of first-grade elementary school students.
