The writer was interested to do the research&#xD; because most people only know that pesantren only teach their students with Arabic.&#xD; In fact, the pesantren also teaches English. This research used quantitative research&#xD; intended to find out the degrees of motivations that santris have to learn English and&#xD; also to figure out the dominant factors that motivate santris to learn English . This&#xD; research emphasizes two kinds of motivations that the santris of Pondok Pesantren&#xD; Askhabul Kahfi Gunungpati have. They are the integrative and instrumental&#xD; motivation. The writer obtained the data from the questionnaire given to 42&#xD; respondents at Pondok Pesantren Askhabul Kahfi Gunungpati who take English class&#xD; as their extracurricular. It was found that the santris have a higher degree of&#xD; integrative and moderate degree of instrumental motivation. They had more interest&#xD; to learn English because they wanted to be a part of the cultural societies rather than&#xD; to get the financial gain in time. There are also some factors which are believed to&#xD; motivate the santris in learning English, they are the classroom situations, the&#xD; teachers&#x201F; way of teaching, the characteristics of teachers, and also the material&#xD; difficulty.
