White frangipani (Plumeria alba) is shown to have antibacterial active compounds. The aim of this study was to determine the antibacterial activity of ethanolic extract of white frangipani flower (Plumeria alba) in inhibiting dental plaque bacteria Porphyromonas gingivalis growth.
This study used concentration of extract 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and sterile aquadest as the negative control group. The method that is used in this study was well-diffusion method with 5 plates of MHA which had been swabbed with Porphyromonas gingivalis. Five wells with 5 mm diameter were made in each plate. Each well was dropped by 30 μl of extract concentration of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and sterile aquadest respectively. The plates were incubated for 48 hours on 37oC. The antibacterial activity could be determined by measuring the diameter of inhibition zone using sliding caliper. The result was analyzed with one-way Anova and LSD.
The result of this study showed that ethanolic extract of white frangipani flower (Plumeria alba) had antibacterial activities to Porphyromonas gingivalis (p<0,05). There was statistically significant difference among extract concentration of 20%, 40%, and 60%, but there was insignificant difference between extract concentration of 60% and 80%.</description><publisher>[Yogyakarta] : Universitas Gadjah Mada</publisher><date>2013</date><type>Thesis:Thesis</type><type>PeerReview:NonPeerReviewed</type><identifier> , RELLYCA SOLA GRACEA and , drg. The method that is used in this study was well-diffusion method with 5 plates of MHA which had been swabbed with Porphyromonas gingivalis. Five wells with 5 mm diameter were made in each plate. Each well was dropped by 30 Î1⁄4l of extract concentration of 20%, 40%, 60%, 80% and sterile aquadest respectively. The plates were incubated for 48 hours on 37oC. The antibacterial activity could be determined by measuring the diameter of inhibition zone using sliding caliper. The result was analyzed with one-way Anova and LSD.
