- The proportional hazards model is the most widely accepted and utilized model for survival analysis, because results in an estimate that is meaningful and understood by medical investigators. The advantages of the methods are that it is essentially distribution-free and it results in a natural estimate for the risk for failure associated with a vector of covariates. In most applications, the data may be interval-censored. By interval-censored data, we mean that a random variable of interest is known only to lie in an interval. In such cases, the only information we have for each individual is that their event time falls in an interval, but the exact time is unknown. The survival function is perhaps the most important function in medical and health studies. Using Turnbull method, a nonparametric estimation of survival function can also be found in such interval-censored situations. Results given for testing the hypothesis of a zero regression coefficient lead to a generalization of the log-rank test for comparison of several survival curves using score method.
