- Background: Staphylococcus aureus is a normal flora in humans found on the skin and in the upper respiratory tract. Athletes are one of those most vulnerable to colonization by S.aureus. This study aimed to explore risk factors of S.aureus colonization in the anterior nares soccer athletes in Semarang. Methods: This was an observational analytic study with cross-sectional data retrieval. A total of 96 soccer athletes in Semarang who met inclusion and exclusion criteria, filled out a questionnaire to get a variable risk factors and taken their nasal swabs. Identification of S.aureus colonization was carried out according to microbiology standard. Data was analyzed by Chi-square/Fisherexact and then logistic regression in SPSS 15.0 for windows. Result: Positive S.aureus colonization was found in 38 samples. Hand washing without soap was a risk factor for colonization of S.aureus in soccer athletes (p = 0.016; RP 2.909 95% CI = 1.218 to 6.947) and habit of sharing towels was also a risk factor for S.aureus colonization (p = 0.029; RP 2.675 ; IK95% = 1.108 to 6.460). While the age of the players (p = 0.518) and position players in a soccer game (p = 0.986) had no significant effect against S.aureus colonization in soccer athletes. Conclusion: Hand washing without soap and towels sharing habits are risk factors for S.aureus colonization in athletes soccer in Semarang while the age of the player and the player position in a soccer game has no effect on S.aureus colonization in soccer athletes in Semarang.
