  • In 1998 the expression 'open-source software' begun to be used among programmers. The concept of free software (meaning 'open', not 'free') is well older, however the term 'open' - ideologically less strong than 'free' - had an unexpected success, so that it openened the doors of ICT-based industry and services. Also in the field of scholarly communication - and more specifically in the dissemination of research results through publications - new technologies unveiled the crisis of the traditional model, based on the costly services by the publishing multinationals, and offered alternative solutions for open access through open archives. The techonological infrastructure - based on OAI-PMH protocol - makes open archives interoperable and preludes to the creation of a huge distributed world archive of scholarly literature. This report will illustrate some practical implementation examples, the E-LIS case at CILEA and the AEPIC-OA project (a national platform for Italian open archives).
