  • A study about epilithic diatom as bioindicator of water quality before PDAM Intake in Kuranji River, West Sumatera was conducted on February until April 2017. The objective of this study was to clarify abundant of epilithic diatom and to determining the compatibility of TDI, %PTV, and IBD towards WQI of NSF (Water Quality Index of National Sanitation Foundation) in Kuranji River. Samples were collected in 3 stations by purposive random sampling and brushing method. The results showed that totally 82 spesies from 22 genus had been found with total abundant of epilithic diatom was 5046,42 ind/cm2. Synedra sp and Fragillaria sp were dominant grup of diatom which are found in almost all sites. Diversity index was 1.55 to 1.66, where the highest was observed at station I and the lowest one at station III. Equitability index was 0.38 to 0.40. The analysis of site cluster based on the physical and chemical data in the waters and the value of biological index (TDI, %PTV, IBD) show that the sites of Station II and III are classified into the same groups. The approach of TDI, %PTV, and IBD which compatible with WQI in determining the aquatic conditions was TDI. Based on those index, it was obtained that the aquatic conditions of Kuranji River ranged from good to fair. Key Word : epilithic diatom, Kuranji River, water quality index, diatom index,
