Al Biruni Makassar. Thesis. English Department, Faculty of Languages and

This research aimed to find out whether or not the use of circumlocution
strategy could improve students’ vocabulary mastery in terms of form, function,
and meaning. The researcher applied pre-experimental design. The population and
sample of this research were 10 students by followed the number of student in
grade tenth of SMA-IT Al Biruni Makassar in the academic year 2016/2017 or
census sampling. Vocabulary test was given in pretest and posttest to know the
students’ vocabulary mastery before and after treatment. The result of this
research shows that the use of circumlocution strategy improved the tenth grade
students’ vocabulary mastery at SMA-IT Al Biruni Makassar. The value of t-test
(7.865) is greater than t-table (2.262) and the degree of freedom (df)=9. It means
that the null hypothesis (H0) is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (H1) is
accepted. It is concluded that circumlocution strategy is effective to improve the
tenth grade students’ vocabulary mastery at SMA-IT Al Biruni Makassar and also
