There are some factors to reach this. One of those factors is described in the term of cohesion that exist within text. Cohesion is a semantic one ; it refers to relations of meaning that exist within a text and that de&#xFB01;ne it as a text. It has a function to link each element in the text that holds a text together and gives it meaning. Furthermore , cohesion will create harmony in the text that helps the reader to interprete the text easily. Cohesion has some devices to make a text cohesive by using particular types of words and phrases, namely, cohesive devices. In this study, the researcher analysed the cohesive devices used in the narrative paragraph written by the fifth semester students of English Department in University of Muhammadiyah Malang.&#xD; &#xD; The aims of this study was to know the types of cohesive devices that occurred in the students&#xC2;&#x2019; narrative paragraph and the most dominant of typeof cohesive devices used in the students&#xC2;&#x2019; narrative paragraph.&#xD; &#xD; In this study, the researcher used descriptive research design. Both quantitave and qualitative method were used to answer the statements of problems in this research. The sample of this study were 22 fifth semester students of English Department in University of Muhammadiyah Malang. The data were collected by collecting the students&#xC2;&#x2019; narrative paragraph.&#xD; &#xD; The result of this study showed that three major types from five major types of cohesive devices that were proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1994) were found in the students&#xC2;&#x2019; narrative paragraph. They were reference, conjunction and lexical cohesion. Substitution and ellipsis were not found in the students&#xC2;&#x2019; narrative paragraph. The researcher found that reference was the most dominant in use in the students&#xC2;&#x2019; narrative paragraph with the percentage of use was 63 %. Among three types of reference that were found in the students&#xC2;&#x2019; narrative paragraph, personal reference mostly used by the students with the percentage of occurrence 83 % of total of the occurrence of reference.</description><date>2012-04-12</date><type>Thesis:Thesis</type><type>PeerReview:NonPeerReviewed</type><type>Book:Book</type><language>eng</language><identifier>http://eprints.umm.ac.id/29194/1/jiptummb--rezaandika-28084-2-chapter1.pdf</identifier><type>Book:Book</type><language>eng</language><identifier>http://eprints.umm.ac.id/29194/2/jiptummb--rezaandika-28084-1-pendahul-n.pdf</identifier><identifier> HENDRAYANA, REZA ANDIKA (2012) AN ANALYSIS OF COHESIVE DEVICES USED IN THE NARRATIVE PARAGRAPH WRITTEN BY THE FIFTH SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH DEPARTMENT IN UNIVERSITY OF MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG.
