- Skill in reading al-Qur’an has become a growing need among many people. Learners’ methods and age level also contribute to the ease of enhancing this skill. Madrasah diniyah as one of the Islamic religious educational institutions that is able to fulfill this need employs various methods of learning al-Qur’an. Thus, it is argued that the use of effective methods can be one key in optimizing students’ skills particularly skill in reading al-Qur’an. This study aims to describe the implementation of Tilawati and Ummi methods for reading al-Qur’an in Madin Malang. In addition, this study would like to analyze the results of the comparison of the effectiveness of learning al-Qur’an by using Tilawati and Ummi methods. This study employs qualitative and quantitative approaches. This research is a case study in Madin "DarulHikmah" and Madin "Al-Barokah" Malang. Direct data source is Madin teachers, students and the Principal of Madin, while the non-direct data sources include Madin administrative data, pre-test and post-test on 30 respondents. In this study the researcher applies purposive sampling and triangulation to collect the data. The analysis technique employs quantitative descriptive analysis technique and the T test is described using SPSS 2.1. In addition, qualitative data is described using qualitative descriptive analysis technique. The process of data analysis employs interactive analysis technique based on an interactive model developed by Miles and Huberman. The results show that Tilawati methodis appropriate for younger students especially children, whereas Ummi methodis appropriate for novice students who are already prepared, both gross motor skills and fine motor skills, and have been prepared in terms of the development of the nervous verbal coordination. Results of other studies related to the effectiveness of learning al-Qur’an using Ummi and Tilawati methods based on T test using SPSS 2.1 show that the difference of mean value of Tilawati method is 0.1500, while the difference of mean value of Ummi method is 0.2084. In other words, the increase of Ummi mean score is bigger than Tilawati. It means in the case of learning al-Qur’an, Ummi method is more effective than Tilawati method.
