Hasanuddin Fatsah, M.Hum and second advisor Yusna Bantulu, S.Pd, M.A. The focus of this research is to see how are the teachers' role in teaching and learning process at SMA N 1 West Bolangitang. The research objective is to know the teachers' role in teaching and learning process at SMA N 1 West Bolangitang. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative approach. The techniques of collecting the data are observation, interview and document. The analysed data used taxonomy analysis. The focus of study is teachers' role as controller, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, resource, tutor, and observer. The base of literature review is teacher' role in teaching by Harmer theory; those are teacher as controller, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, resource, tutor, and observer. In this research, I found that the teachers that handled class X3 (Mrs. S(pseudonyms) focused only five roles; those are the role as controller, organizer, assessor, resource, and observer. While, the teachers that handled class X6 (Mrs. M(pseudonyms) focused only four roles; those are the role as controller, organizer, and assessor. and observer. So that, the students feels unmotivated and lazy in learning English. In addition, teaching and learning process is unsuccessful. The research suggests, in teaching and learning process, the teacher should be implying eight roles; there are controller, organizer, assessor, prompter, participant, resource, tutor and observer, because the eight roles can help students' difficulty in teaching and learning process in the class.
