The present study investigates the students' ability in describing person orally in English as the medium of instructions. This study was applied by using a rubric of speaking ability adopted by Brown's concept (2001). Moreover, the purpose of this research is aimed to find out how the students' ability in describing person orally. It is conducted by using a quantitative method as the design of this research. To collect the data, an oral test was used to observe and determinestudents' ability in describing the students' ability to speak. Furthermore, this research was conducted atSMP Negeri 7 Gorontalo. There were 17 students as the subjects involving in this research. Out of 17 students,5 of them were males and 12 of them were females.Importantly, the result of the research has shown thatthe students were still difficult to speak in English. It can be seen in some aspects of speaking namely pronunciation (49%), vocabulary (42%), grammar (57%), fluency (57%), and comprehension (57%). From those 17 students, it can be explained that no one who can be categorized into a very good level. However,one student was categorized into a good level, butno one of all the students can be categorized into an average level. Therefore, 16 students were categorized into a poor level, and there were no students who can be categorized into a very poor level due to their difficulties in each component of speaking especially in vocabulary. Consequently, they could not speak fluently, because they had less practice and lack vocabulary in speaking. Key words: Speaking, Ability, Describing person.
