Keywords: Effectiveness, Teaching and Learning, Past Tense, Pocket Chart This research describes the effectiveness of using Pocket Chart in teaching and learning Past Tense at eighth grade MTsN Panyipatan in academic year 2014/2015. The writer choose this title is to know whether using Pocket Chart in teaching and learning Past Tense in experiment class more effective than teaching and learning Past Tense without using Pocket Chart. The problem formulations of this research are: how is the students’ mastery of Past Tense use Pocket Chart in experiment class at the eighth grade of MTsN Panyipatan?, how is the students’ mastery of Past Tense without use Pocket Chart in control class at the eighth grade of MTsN Panyipatan?, is there significant difference in teaching and learning Past Tense between experiment class and control class at MTsN Panyipatan? The subjects in this research is the students of VIII A as the experiment class are 16 students and VIII B as the control class are 16 students. The object of this research is the comparison of students’ mastery in Past Tense between experiment class and control class at eight grade MTsN panyipatan in academic year 2014/2015. The collected data, the writer uses some techniques such as written test (pre test and post test), observation, interview, and documentary. Data processing in this research is divided into three phases: editing, coding, and tabulating. Then, all the data are analyzed quantitatively and then concluded. The result of this research states that the students’ mastery of Past Tense for experiment class by using Pocket Chart is excellent category. It can be seen in calculating mean of experiment class is 80,25. Meanwhile the students’ mastery of Past Tenses in control class without Pocket Chart is fair category. It can be seen in calculating mean of control class is 60. This research is indicated that H0 (zero hypotheses) is rejected and Ha (alternative hypotheses) is accepted because the students’ t-test (to) is higher that t table (tt). So, there is significant difference in the effectiveness teaching and learning Past Tense between students in experiment class and control class. It can be seen from to = 2,94 and tt in significant level 5%= 2,03 and significance level 1%= 2,72. Based on the accounting above, it concluded that teaching and learning Past Tense using Pocket Chart is more effective than without not using Pocket Chart.
