  • This article presents a comprehensive summary of some of the best practices in health and safety that are found in many developed countries around the world, particularly in OECD countries like Indonesia, New Zealand and Australia, and among some European states. Understanding the best OSH practices in other countries will give Indonesia a good benchmark for promoting and enhancing the capabilties of its agencies in promoting a safety culture, knowing from facts how high the humber of work accidents are. From this study we see the significance of several employee participation schemes like safety committees and safety representatives. Safety committees have been found to be effective in bringing together a collective strength in the planning, design, and implementation of safety and heath programs, while safety representatives bring labor union participation and employee voice in similarly planning, designing, and implementing such programs. This article concludes that the success of every health and safety programs depends not much on the organization providing the channels but also on the active participation of employees in these efforts.
